Minecraft Java Edition September 2026 Changes: Wilderness Bound RC2 Details

Minecraft Java Edition received 26.3 Release Candidate 2 on September 11, 2026, the final test build before the Wilderness Bound game drop launches September 15th. The only documented change fixes a folder-opening freeze bug.

What Is the Wilderness Bound Game Drop

Mojang now uses a year-based version system. The 26.x series belongs to 2026 game drops. Wilderness Bound is the September 2026 feature release, arriving as version 26.3 on September 15th if no critical issues appear in testing. This follows the 26.2 release from June.

Only One Bug Fix in Release Candidate 2

The changelog for 26.3 Release Candidate 2 is remarkably short. A single bug fix: MC-311782, where clicking a button that opens a folder would freeze the game until the folder actually opened. That's it. No new features, no mechanic tweaks, no world generation changes. Just a UI responsiveness fix.

If you were hoping for a list of new blocks, mobs, or biome adjustments in this RC, there aren't any. Those would've landed in earlier snapshots. Release candidates exist purely for stability validation.

How to Test the Release Candidate

You can try 26.3-rc-2 right now. Open the Minecraft Launcher, go to the Installations tab, enable snapshots, and create a new installation selecting "Latest snapshot." The launcher will download the release candidate.

Back up your worlds first. Testing versions can corrupt saves. Run them in a separate folder from your main worlds. The cross-platform server jar is also available if you run a server.

What This Means for Regular Players

If you don't play snapshots, nothing changes today. The stable 26.3 release arrives September 15th automatically through the launcher's "Latest Release" profile. One folder-freeze fix will be included. That's the only September change you'll notice on the stable branch.

Players on 26.2 (the current stable release from June) will see the full Wilderness Bound feature set when 26.3 drops. The release candidate phase just confirms the build is solid.

Found something broken in 26.3-rc-2? Report it on the official Minecraft issue tracker. Mojang explicitly asks for feedback during the release candidate window. Critical bugs found now could delay the September 15th launch.
