What Essentials is
Essentials, published on Hangar under the name EssentialsX, is a utility and quality of life plugin suite for Minecraft servers. It bundles more than 130 commands plus extra features aimed at day to day server administration and player convenience. The project is a modern continuation of the original Essentials suite for Bukkit, and it keeps working with current Minecraft versions. A client side is unsupported. A server side is required.
Who it's for
It suits server owners and admins running CraftBukkit, Spigot or Paper who want a broad base of admin and player commands in one plugin rather than stitching together many small ones. If you already run the original Essentials, EssentialsX is described as a drop in replacement, though it brings some new requirements with it.
Main capabilities
The main draw is breadth. You get over 130 commands covering common administration and player facing tasks. On top of the original Essentials, EssentialsX adds performance enhancements, bug fixes, and features that the older Essentials and Spigot Essentials don't have. Look, anonymous server statistics are collected through bStats, and you can opt out in plugins/bStats/config.yml. Translations are crowd sourced through Crowdin, so the plugin ships in multiple languages.
Requirements
EssentialsX needs CraftBukkit, Spigot or Paper to run, and Paper is the recommended choice. It requires Java 8 or higher. For chat prefixes and suffixes, and for group support from supported permissions plugins, it needs Vault. The team recommends LuckPerms for permissions and groups. If you use an unsupported permissions plugin but still want wildcard permissions, you can enable use-bukkit-permissions in the config. Otherwise the plugin falls back to config based permissions.
Compatibility
EssentialsX officially supports Minecraft 1.21, 1.20.6 and 1.19.4, and it can also run on older versions. Server software other than CraftBukkit, Spigot and Paper may work, but it is not tested by the team and may cause compatibility issues. Keep in mind that this is EssentialsX, a fork of the original Essentials, and its maintainers ask that you don't request support from the original Essentials project.
Support and licensing
Essentials is open source under the GPLv3 license. Help is available through the MOSS Discord community and through GitHub, where you can also report bugs. The plugin is free of charge, with optional donations through Patreon and GitHub Sponsors.
