What it does
Ruined Equipment changes the way broken gear behaves. When a tool or armor reaches zero durability, it turns into a Ruined version that still holds its name, enchantments, dyes, and banner patterns. The broken item can then be
- repaired in a crafting grid or an anvil, keeping or discarding its data;
- upgraded by adding a Netherite Scrap in an anvil, which makes any existing enchantments max level when the item is repaired;
- given extra lore lines by combining it with a Name Tag in an anvil; and
- kept as a keepsake that never disappears.
The mod also drops a “Ruined Item’s Ashes” for modded tools and armor that don't receive special textures.
Who it suits
If you like to remember the gear you lost or want a way to keep the history of an item, this mod lets you do that. It also gives a simple method to repair or upgrade broken items without losing custom names or enchantments.

How it works
When a tool or armor breaks, the mod replaces it with a ruined version that plays the same break sound. The ruined item can be repaired in a crafting grid by combining it with another ruined item of the same type or the original item; this repair removes all custom data. An anvil repair keeps the data. Adding a Netherite Scrap in an anvil turns the ruined item into an Empowered version; repairing an empowered item with an anvil upgrades all enchantments to maximum level. Real talk, name Tags can be used to add lore lines or clear them.
Visuals
The mod includes screenshots of ruined items, repairs in an anvil, and empowered items, showing how the data is preserved and how the lore appears.
Configuration
In-game configuration is available through ModMenu, allowing you to tweak various options.
Release notes
Changelogs are posted on the GitHub releases page. The latest release is v2.3.2 for 1.20.4/5.
Summary
Ruined Equipment gives you a way to keep broken gear alive, repair it with or without its custom data, upgrade it to max enchantments, and add lore. It works on Fabric for lots of Minecraft versions and requires Fabric API and Cloth Config.
