What is Indium?

Indium is an addon for Sodium. It adds support for the Fabric Rendering API, which Sodium doesn't include on its own. Many mods use this API for advanced rendering effects. Without Indium, those mods can have broken textures and models when Sodium is installed.

Indium is based on Indigo, the reference implementation of the Fabric Rendering API that comes with Fabric API. When Sodium is present, Indigo disables itself. Indium steps in to fill that gap.

Important: Sodium 0.6.0 Changed Things

Starting with Sodium 0.6.0, Fabric Rendering API support is built directly into Sodium. That means Indium is no longer needed. It also is not compatible with Sodium 0.6.0 or newer. If you're using Sodium 0.6.0+, don't install Indium.

Who needs Indium?

You need Indium if you use Sodium and any mod that relies on the Fabric Rendering API. Examples include Campanion, Bits and Chisels, LambdaBetterGrass, Continuity, and Packages. This is not a full list. Many other mods use the API too.

If you don't use Sodium, you don't need Indium. Fabric API already includes Indigo, which handles the rendering API on its own.

Performance impact

Indium itself has a negligible effect on performance. It doesn't make things faster than using Sodium alone. However, mods that use the Fabric Rendering API can affect performance on their own.

Requirements

Indium requires Fabric API. Here's the thing, you need Fabric API to provide the rendering API, and Indium to implement it. Indium works with Fabric and Quilt loaders.

Compatibility

Indium requires Sodium 0.2.0 or newer. The latest release, Indium 1.0.36, works with Minecraft 1.20.1, 1.20.5, and 1.20.6, and Sodium 0.5.11. Earlier releases cover versions from 1.20.1 through 1.21.1. Check the specific release notes for exact version support.

Iris may not always be compatible with the latest Indium build. If you run into issues with Iris, ask the Iris support channels for help.
