What Ratatouille Is

Ratatouille is a Java library created by the developer RAT. And it is meant to be used by other mods, especially those made by doctor4t, and by creators who want simple cosmetic features. The library works on both the client and the server, so any mod that includes it'll run in single-player or on a multiplayer server.

Core Utilities

The library bundles several helpers:

  • Rendering utilities that build on the Lodestone and Lodestar code bases, making it easier to draw custom elements in the world.
  • A cosmetics customization tool that lets modders expose simple colour or texture options without writing a full UI. It was originally built for supporter cosmetics but works for any mod that needs basic cosmetic tweaks.
  • Item-specific hit-sound and particle helpers, so developers can attach a unique sound or particle burst to a custom item with a single call.
  • A first-person feature renderer that lets a mod display extra graphics on the player’s hand by implementing a small interface.
  • A custom-model armor helper that registers armor sets with a custom model using one method call, bypassing the usual mixin and layer setup. The helper also ensures the armor appears correctly in first-person view.

Extra Fun Features

Beyond the core library, Ratatouille ships with a few novelty items:

  • RAT plushies (Rat Maid, Folly, and Mauve) that can be honked. Placing a noteblock on top of a plush plays its honk sound.
  • A mechanic that lets players in creative mode give items or armor to mobs by sneaking and interacting, and retrieve all equipped gear by sneaking-clicking with an empty hand.
  • Supporter cosmetics for Ko-Fi or YouTube members, including a name-color tag, an icon next to the player’s name, and a head-plushie screen that opens when the player sneak-uses a plush item while not targeting a block.

Who Should Use It

If you are building a mod that needs custom armor models, simple cosmetic toggles, or custom hit effects, Ratatouille gives you ready-made utilities so you don’t have to write the low-level code yourself. It also fits well for creators who want to add supporter-only visual perks without building a full UI from scratch.

Compatibility

Ratatouille runs on Minecraft version 1.21.1 only. It supports the Fabric and Quilt mod loaders and requires both client-side and server-side installation. No other versions, loaders, or side-only setups are listed as supported.

Getting Started

To include Ratatouille, add it as a modImplementation dependency in your Gradle file, pointing to the version that matches 1.21.1. The repository is hosted on Ladysnake’s Maven. After adding the dependency, you can call the provided utility methods directly in your mod’s code.

Limitations

Because the library only declares support for 1.21.1, it won't load on earlier or later Minecraft releases unless the author updates it. Honestly, likewise, it doesn't work with Forge or other loaders beyond Fabric and Quilt.

Summary

Ratatouille streamlines rendering, cosmetic, and armor customization for Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric/Quilt mods, while also offering a handful of playful plushie items and supporter perks.
