Divide your Overworld X and Z coordinates by 8 to get the corresponding Nether coordinates. The Y coordinate stays the same. For example, Overworld (800, 64, 400) becomes Nether (100, 64, 50). To convert from Nether to Overworld, multiply X and Z by 8.
The Y coordinate is not scaled in the conversion, but it IS used when the game calculates which portal to link to. The game uses 3D Euclidean distance including Y, so portals at very different heights can cause linking to the wrong portal.
The minimum nether portal (4 wide × 5 tall) requires 10 obsidian blocks without corners or 14 with corners. The maximum portal size of 23×23 requires up to 88 obsidian blocks with corners.

A nether hub is a central structure in the Nether connecting multiple portals for fast travel. Since 1 Nether block = 8 Overworld blocks, travelling through a nether hub reduces travel distance by 87.5%, making it the most efficient way to move between distant bases.
