Cognition

by cyanog3n

Cognition is a client-server mod by cyanog3n that reworks XP storage and usage, adding the Cognitium resource for magical and tech machines on Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1.

Our summary

What this project does

Overview

Cognition, created by cyanog3n, replaces the older Experience Obelisk mod. It overhauls how experience points work by turning them into a tangible resource called Cognitium. This lets you store, transport, and power a variety of magical and technological devices.

Who Might Like It

If you enjoy building machines that need a steady energy source, or you like adding a mystical twist to your redstone projects, Cognition gives you a new way to handle XP. Real talk, it fits both magic-focused packs and tech-heavy setups because the same resource powers both kinds of contraptions.

Core Features

  • Cognitium acts as a physical form of knowledge that can be moved in item form.
  • New blocks and items let you deposit XP, retrieve it later, or feed it directly into compatible machines.
  • The mod is still small but promises more content in future updates.

Compatibility

Cognition runs on NeoForge and Forge loaders and requires both client and server sides to be present. So it officially supports Minecraft 1.20.1 and Minecraft 1.21.1 only. The mod ID remains experienceobelisk for older versions but switches to cognition from version 2.3.7-1.21.1 onward.

Optional Add-Ons

For visual effects, the mod needs Geckolib 4 on 1.20.1+ (Geckolib 3 for older 1.18.2/1.19.2 builds). Installing Curios API lets you equip Cognition items in curios slots, but it isn't required for core functionality.

Getting Help

Bug reports and feature requests are accepted via the GitHub repository. The developer also runs a Discord community for updates and discussion.

Acknowledgements

The block models were created by Squishy, and playtesting help came from lazerdude. The original concept was inspired by EnderIO’s experience obelisk, and the mod acknowledges that foundation.

Future Plans

While the current release offers a limited set of blocks, the author has indicated that more XP-based machinery and utilities are in development.
