Handful

by mammut53

Handful is a client-side Minecraft mod that renders full item stacks in entities' hands exactly as they appear when dropped, enhancing visual immersion for 2D items using Fabric or NeoForge loaders.

Our summary

What this project does

Handful

Handful is a visual client-side Minecraft mod that changes how item stacks appear in entities' hands. Instead of showing a single item for large stacks, it renders the full quantity exactly as those items would look if dropped on the ground. This applies to any entity holding a stack, including players, mobs, or other entities, providing a more accurate and immersive representation of inventory contents.

Key Features

Full Stack Visuals: Whether holding 2 items or a full stack of 64, Handful displays every item in the stack using the same 3D model and orientation as the dropped item entity. This creates a consistent visual experience between held items and ground items, making large stacks of resources, gems, or currency feel more substantial and realistic.

Selective Item Affection: The mod only affects 2D items such as coins, gems, paper, or food items. Blocks, 3D models like tools or weapons, and items with custom rendering remain unchanged to prevent visual confusion or conflicts with other mods that rely on specific item presentations.

Entity-Wide Application: The visualization isn't limited to the player's hand. Any entity capable of holding an item stack - such as armor stands, item frames (via custom code), or mobs equipped with gear - will display the full stack rendering, allowing for consistent visuals across all entity interactions.

Technical Implementation

Handful operates exclusively on the client side, meaning it modifies only how the game renders items without altering game mechanics, server behavior, or multiplayer synchronization. It doesn't change item NBT data, stack sizes, or interaction logic; it purely intercepts the rendering process for hand-held items.

The mod requires either the Fabric or NeoForge mod loader to function. It isn't compatible with Forge, Quilt, or other loader platforms, and it won't load if neither supported loader is present. Here's the thing, server-side installation is unnecessary and ineffective, as the mod has no server components.

Supported Minecraft Versions

Handful supports specific versions within the Minecraft 26.1 and 26.2 development series. But this includes:

  • Base releases: 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2
  • Release candidates: 26.1-rc-1, 26.1-rc-2, 26.1-rc-3, 26.2-rc-1, 26.2-rc-2
  • Snapshots: 26.1-snapshot-1 through 26.1-snapshot-11, and 26.2-snapshot-1 through 26.2-snapshot-8
  • Pre-releases: 26.1-pre-1, 26.1-pre-2, 26.1-pre-3, 26.2-pre-2, 26.2-pre-3, 26.2-pre-4, 26.2-pre-5, 26.2-pre-6

The mod does not claim compatibility with stable releases outside this list, nor with any version outside the 26.1 and 26.2 series. Each supported version is explicitly listed based on official Modrinth indexing, and no continuous version ranges are implied.

Use Cases and Benefits

Players use Handful to better appreciate large collections of items such as diamond hoards, coin economies in multiplayer servers, or stacked resources like wheat or iron ingots. By showing the true visual volume of a stack, it enhances immersion in building, trading, or survival gameplay without providing any competitive advantage.

The mod is particularly useful in cinematic shots, map making, or content creation where accurate item representation matters. Since it only changes visuals and does not affect gameplay, it can be safely used alongside other mods that alter mechanics, as long as they don't modify the same item rendering layers.

Limitations and Considerations

Because Handful only affects 2D items, users won't see changes for swords, pickaxes, or other 3D-modeled items. This is intentional to avoid visual clutter and maintain clarity. And the mod doesn't work in environments where client-side mods are restricted, such as certain vanilla servers or realms.

There's no known interaction with entity AI or behavior; mobs holding items won't act differently due to the visual change. The mod’s performance impact is minimal, as it only activates during item rendering in first-person or third-person views.
