ImproperUI

by ItziSpyder

A Fabric library that lets mod developers build in-game GUIs with a CSS-inspired scripting language instead of raw Java rendering code.

Our summary

What this project does

What it does ImproperUI is a rendering library for Fabric mod developers. It replaces hand-written GUI rendering with a custom scripting language that borrows heavily from CSS and HTML. You write .ui scripts that describe layout, styling, and interaction, then load them at runtime. The library parses the scripts and builds the corresponding screens, widgets, and event wiring for you. ## Who it suits This is not a drop-in mod for players. It targets developers who already know basic CSS properties, HTML structure, and Java. If you're comfortable writing a build.gradle file and implementing ModInitializer, you can use ImproperUI to avoid the usual boilerplate of Screen, Widget, and manual draw calls. ## Verified capabilities - Script syntax modeled on CSS selectors, properties, and values. - Draggable, scrollable, and interactive elements demonstrated in the project's own home screen. - Event system: declare handlers in scripts (on-click: sendHelloWorld) and implement CallbackListener in Java with @CallbackHandler methods. - Helper APIs to collect elements by ID, class, or z-index (collect(), collectById(), collectFirstByClassAttribute(), etc.). - Config binding: slider or checkbox values can persist to a mod's config file using a modId:configFile:property key syntax. - TextField handling revamped in the latest beta for better usability. ## Compatibility caveats - Fabric only. No Forge, NeoForge, or Quilt support is listed. - Client-side required; server side unsupported. - Minecraft versions explicitly supported: 26.2, 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.8, 1.21.7, 1.21.6, 1.21, 1.20.6, 1.20.4, 1.20.3, 1.20.2. - Distributed as a JAR you add manually to libs/ and declare as compileOnly in Gradle; no Maven repository is provided. - License is MIT.
