Our summary

What this project does

What melody does

Melody is an OpenAL client-side library mod created by Keksuccino. It gives developers a direct tool to play background music in the game. The mod doesn't add user-facing items, blocks, or direct gameplay changes on its own. Its purpose is to serve as a shared dependency for other mods. Players install it when another mod requires its audio systems.

Audio handling and formats

Melody runs OpenAL audio separately from the standard Minecraft sound engine and sound manager. Here's the thing, because it bypasses the default audio pipeline, it gives developers an isolated environment for handling background music.

The library supports asynchronous audio loading. Audio files can load from various sources, including web links and remote addresses. That means a dependent mod can fetch and stream music over the internet without freezing the client.

For file compatibility, Melody includes built-in support for OGG and WAV audio files. If a developer needs additional formats, the library can be extended to support more file types. Mod creators can look at the SimpleAudioFactory class in the source code to see how to prepare ready-to-play audio sources.

Positional sound limits

Melody has specific limits on sound placement. It can't play directional 3D audio with a fixed coordinate origin in the game environment. If a sound needs to originate from an exact block position or a moving mob, Melody can't play it.

The library plays flat 2D audio only. This limitation makes it fit for menu screens, ambient soundtracks, and non-positional background music loops.

Technical details and compatibility

Melody is open-source software published under the MIT license. The author provides documentation inside the public GitHub source repository.

The mod supports two loaders: Fabric and Neoforge. Modrinth records list supported Minecraft versions as 26.3, 26.2, 26.1.2, 26.1.1, and 1.21.11. Client side and server side environment states are marked as unknown on the Modrinth record, but the description specifies that it operates as a client-side library mod.
