Our summary

What this project does

what nyctophobia adds

Nyctophobia adds eerie Overworld biomes to Minecraft. You get dark woodlands, scorched trees, and foggy wetlands without extra clutter.

The mod does not introduce custom blocks, new items, or custom mobs. Every terrain feature and structure is built with standard vanilla blocks. Because of this, it stays compatible with regular texture packs and other world generation mods. If you want a moodier map without memorizing custom item drops, this mod fits your world.

biomes and fog

Seven distinct biomes replace specific vanilla biomes during terrain generation. Haunted Forest replaces Windswept Forest and Taiga, filling the space with dense mist, cobwebs, and soul lights. Eroded Haunted Forest replaces Meadows, presenting a barren wasteland with bare trees. Haunted Lakes takes over Swamps with red water and candle-lined shores. Marshlands replaces Mangrove Swamps and Birch Forests with mud banks, shallow pools, and thickets inhabited by witches, slimes, and frogs. Burnt Forest takes the place of Old Growth Pine Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, and Windswept Hills, leaving charred wood and skeletons. Deep Dark Forest takes over Dark Forest areas with wide tree crowns and giant red mushrooms. Dead Coral Reef replaces Beach biomes with bleached coral structures.

Four of these biomes feature custom volumetric-style fog. The effect fades in as you enter the biome and clears as you leave. This fog is a visual effect on your client. It never overrides vanilla fog when you swim underwater, step into lava, or get the blindness status effect. You can toggle the fog at any time using the /nyctophobia fog command, or set it directly with /nyctophobia fog on and /nyctophobia fog off.

mod requirements

Both the client and server must install the mod. It supports Minecraft versions 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.21.1, and 1.21.8 across NeoForge, Fabric, and Forge.

TerraBlender is required on all supported loaders. Without TerraBlender, the mod can't inject its biomes into world generation. Honestly, if you play on Fabric, you also need Fabric API. Forge and NeoForge do not need Fabric API.

configuration settings

You can configure the mod through config/nyctophobia_config.json5. The file lets you change which vanilla or modded biomes get replaced. You can assign third-party biome identifiers, adjust the overall generation weight with nyctophobiaBiomeWeight, or set a biome weight to zero to disable it completely. Most players can also adjust fog density, set the vertical height band for fog per biome, or turn on soul lanterns instead of candles around Haunted Lakes.
