What It Does
VulkanMod swaps out Minecraft's default OpenGL renderer for a new engine built on the Vulkan graphics API. But it handles the same job Minecraft's renderer normally does, drawing terrain, entities, and the rest of the world, but through a different graphics API that can talk to the GPU more directly and with less overhead.
Who It's For and What You Need
This is a client-side mod. The author lists server side as unsupported, so it doesn't need to run on a server to work for players. You will need a GPU that supports Vulkan 1.2 or higher, and you have to be running the Fabric mod loader. It isn't built for NeoForge or Forge.
Key Features
The mod's stated goal is reduced CPU and GPU overhead compared to the default renderer. On top of that baseline, it applies several specific optimizations: terrain rendering work that spans an optimized draw loop and section culling, separate optimizations for chunk building, and optimizations for entity rendering. Linux users get native Wayland support, and there's a windowed fullscreen mode included as well.
Shaders
VulkanMod doesn't include shader support on its own. Here's the thing, if you want shaders while running it, the author points to a separate companion mod, Beryl, built to work alongside it.
Compatibility Notes
Mod compatibility is not guaranteed once VulkanMod is loaded. The specific risk the author calls out is mods that make direct calls to OpenGL. Because VulkanMod isn't running an OpenGL pipeline, those calls can crash the game. This doesn't mean every other mod breaks, just that anything reaching into OpenGL directly is the known risk case. The project keeps a list of mods known to conflict with it, and checking that list before reporting a crash is the recommended first step.
Recent Improvements
The latest update to the repository focuses on terrain rendering. It improves performance specifically when backface culling is in use, through a reworked memory layout and fewer draw calls, rather than a general framerate claim across all scenes. The same update adds an update checker inside the mod, fixes a texture sampling bug tied to alpha cutout on one of the newer Minecraft versions it supports, and patches a memory leak that could occur if a chunk section upload got interrupted partway through.
Versions Supported
VulkanMod supports a specific set of Minecraft versions rather than a broad range: 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.10, 1.21.9, 1.21.1, and 1.21. If you're on a build outside that list, check the project page before installing.
