Abandoned Camps are a new structure in Minecraft Java 26.3, and the Dappled Forest is one of the biomes where its own camp variant can generate. The important discovery tool is the Explorer Map: Mojang added new maps to Abandoned Camps, including maps that point to other camps in eight different biomes. This guide explains what the official release notes confirm and how to use those maps without relying on invented coordinates or terrain-marker tricks.
Where Abandoned Camps can generate
Abandoned Camps are not exclusive to the Dappled Forest. Java 26.3 lists them in 18 biomes: Meadow, Cherry Grove, Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest, Flower Forest, Windswept Forest, Dappled Forest, Taiga, Snowy Taiga, Old Growth Spruce Taiga, Old Growth Pine Taiga, Sparse Jungle, Bamboo Jungle, Swamp, Savanna, Wooded Badlands and Pale Garden.
Each biome has its own camp variant, with a design based on that biome. Some pieces are shared between variants. Camps can contain chests and barrels with loot. If you are specifically searching for the Dappled Forest version, make sure you are actually in the Dappled Forest rather than assuming that every forest biome uses the same camp design.
How to recognise the Dappled Forest
Mojang describes the Dappled Forest as a new forest biome that can generate near cold biomes. Poplar Trees and fallen Poplar Trees generate there, along with Shelf Mushrooms placed on the trees and fallen trunks. Red Shrubs also appear in small patches. Those are useful environmental clues when exploring, but the official notes do not provide exact coordinates, fixed spacing or a guaranteed camp location for a particular seed.
The biome also has its own passive and neutral mob spawns, including sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes, using cold variants where applicable. These details can help distinguish the biome during exploration, but they are not a substitute for a map or a seed-specific locator.
Use Abandoned Camp Explorer Maps
New Explorer Maps are found in Abandoned Camps. One group of maps points to other Abandoned Camps in eight biomes:
- Bamboo Jungle
- Cherry Grove
- Birch Forest
- Dappled Forest
- Flower Forest
- Pale Garden
- Swamp
- Windswept Forest
That means a camp you discover in one region can help direct you toward another camp in a different supported biome. The map is a navigation aid, not proof that the destination is only a short distance away. Be prepared to travel and check the surrounding terrain as you approach the marked area.
Other structure maps added in 26.3
Abandoned Camps also contain Explorer Maps for seven other structure types: Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Warm Ocean Ruins and Woodland Mansion. These are separate map items, so read the map name before setting out. A map for another structure is not an Abandoned Camp map.
Map behavior and limitations
Explorer Maps are now their own item types rather than renamed Filled Maps, and each has its own icon. Existing Explorer Maps in older worlds are converted to the matching new item when the world loads. The player icon on maps also shows the direction the player is facing, which makes navigation easier when approaching a destination.
There are two important limitations. First, these Explorer Maps cannot be obtained from the Creative inventory. Second, Explorer Maps and Buried Treasure Maps can no longer be zoomed out in a Crafting Table or Cartography Table. They can still be cloned in a Crafting Table, and the copies keep their own item type. Only maps included in the #minecraft:extendable_maps tag can be zoomed out.
A practical search route
- Explore the biome you are already in and watch for an Abandoned Camp variant that matches its surroundings.
- Search the camp's chests and barrels for Explorer Maps.
- Read the map name and check whether it points to another Abandoned Camp or a different structure.
- Use the map marker and player-facing direction to travel toward the target.
- When you reach the destination area, search the nearby terrain rather than expecting the structure to appear at one exact surface coordinate.
- Keep a copy of the map if you want to preserve the route for later exploration.
Mojang's release notes do not publish a universal coordinate pattern, a fixed distance between camps or a special environmental marker that guarantees a camp spawn. Avoid guides that promise exact coordinates without a seed and version. Structure placement is world-generation dependent, so the most reliable method is to use the map in the version that introduced the feature.
Version and world compatibility
Abandoned Camps and their Explorer Maps were added in Java 26.3. If you are exploring an older world, make a backup before opening it in a newer version. New structures generate in eligible terrain as chunks are generated; already explored chunks do not simply regenerate to add every new structure. Travel into unexplored areas if you want to find newly generated content.
