Understanding the Change

Unlike cave-carving modifications that layer new systems on top of your world, this mod replaces the noise generation that creates caves in the first place. This means the caves emerge as part of normal world building rather than as an extra pass.

The Cave Experience

What you encounter underground varies significantly. Some sections compress into tight corridors where you can barely see what's ahead. Others open into sprawling chambers. You might discover underground rivers running through cavern floors, only to lose your footing at a waterfall and tumble into lava below. The cave layouts are designed to be confusing - not frustratingly so, but enough that navigation becomes part of the adventure rather than something trivial.

Design Philosophy

These caves were built with gameplay in mind first, visual appeal second. The intent isn't to craft pretty scenery but to create unpredictable, challenging underground spaces that reward careful movement and mapping. One approach prioritizes making your exploration feel different each time rather than chasing visual polish.

The Technical Approach

Domain warping, a technique that distorts the noise pattern itself, creates the variety. As you go deeper, the terrain becomes increasingly unusual, though the effect stays within reasonable bounds. The mod uses mixins to intercept Minecraft's cave generation at its core, meaning it benefits from the same performance optimizations Mojang built into their own system. This is different from layering new cave generators on top of vanilla generation.

Performance Impact

You'll see roughly 5 seconds of overhead when generating new worlds. This is remarkably small given the scope of the change, and it stays efficient during play without stuttering.

Setup

Nothing to configure. Place the mod in your mods folder and caves immediately change.

Compatibility Details

Runs on Fabric, Forge, and Neoforge. Works on Minecraft versions 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 1.21.3, and 1.21.4. Both client and server need the mod installed.

If you use Worldgen Revisited, compatibility exists but requires manual setup. Here's the thing, disable its cheese and spaghetti cave options and set your world type to -1 to prevent generation conflicts.

Who Needs This

If you play survival mode and want caves that feel less samey, this adds real variety without forcing you to tweak settings. It's especially appealing if you prefer challenge and surprise over predictable layouts. The unpredictability becomes a feature, not a bug.

What It Doesn't Do

This isn't a configuration tool. You can't fine-tune cave size, frequency, or aesthetics to your preference. It's an all-or-nothing replacement of cave generation itself. There's no option to disable it selectively per-world after it's installed beyond using a world created before adding the mod.
