Minecraft 1.21: The Tricky Trials Update - Complete Guide

The Tricky Trials Update is one of the most ambitious Minecraft releases in recent years, introducing a sprawling underground structure, two hostile mobs, a gravity-defying weapon, and a game-changing redstone block. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or a redstone engineer, 1.21 has something that will reshape how you play. This guide covers every major feature, from the hazardous Trial Chambers to the devastating Mace.

What Is the Tricky Trials Update?

Minecraft 1.21, officially titled the Tricky Trials Update, was released on June 13, 2024, for Java Edition and simultaneously for Bedrock Edition. Originally announced at Minecraft Live 2023 on October 15, 2023, the update focuses on three pillars: combat, adventure, and tinkering. It delivers a new underground structure called Trial Chambers, two new hostile mobs (Breeze and Bogged), a unique heavy weapon called the Mace, a redstone-powered Crafter block, and a host of new blocks, items, enchantments, and status effects.

On the technical side, Tricky Trials heralds a new age for data packs - Enchantments, Paintings, and Jukebox Music Discs are now data-driven, opening up possibilities for custom content creators. The update also ships with performance improvements to chunk loading that reduce memory and CPU overhead compared to the old system.

Trial Chambers: The Crown Jewel of 1.21

Minecraft Trial Chambers interior with copper blocks and tuff walls
Trial Chambers are sprawling underground structures made of copper and tuff blocks

The headline addition in the Tricky Trials Update is the Trial Chamber - a sprawling underground structure made primarily of Copper and Tuff blocks. These chambers generate relatively commonly throughout the Deepslate layer of the underground, typically with their starting room between Y=40 and Y=20, and the majority of rooms between Y=20 and Y=0.

How to Find Trial Chambers

Trial Chambers can be located in two ways:

  • Cartographer Villager trades: Journeyman-level Cartographer villagers sell Trial Explorer Maps for 12 Emeralds plus a Compass. These maps lead directly to the nearest Trial Chamber.
  • Exploration: Digging through the Deepslate layer can reveal Trial Chambers naturally. They never start inside a Deep Dark biome, though they can sometimes overlap it.

Structure and Layout

Each Trial Chamber is procedurally generated, meaning no two chambers are identical. The layout includes corridors, combat rooms, trap sections, and reward areas. Key features include:

  • Decorated Pots lining the corridors, holding hidden treasures
  • Supply Barrels between rooms, providing blocks and items to help you navigate the trials
  • Trial Spawners that spawn waves of hostile mobs
  • Vaults guarded by challenges, containing high-level loot
  • Ominous Vaults in harder-to-reach places, offering even better rewards

Natural mob spawning does not occur inside Trial Chambers, similar to Ancient Cities. This means the only threats you face are the ones the Trial Spawners create - but don't let that fool you into complacency.

Trial Spawners

Trial Spawners are a new variant of Monster Spawners that differ from regular spawners in several important ways:

  • They spawn a limited number of mobs - once all are defeated, the spawner ejects rewards
  • They go on a 30-minute cooldown after all mobs are defeated
  • They become ominous when a player with Trial Omen is nearby
  • They cannot be obtained in Survival - they are unbreakable and explosion-resistant
  • They cannot be moved by Pistons

Each Trial Chamber uses one mob type per spawner category for the entire structure. The categories are:

Category Possible Mobs
Melee Zombie, Husk, Spider
Small Melee Slime, Cave Spider, Baby Zombie, Silverfish
Ranged Skeleton, Stray, Bogged

Some Trial Spawners in unique rooms always spawn Breezes, regardless of the chamber's normal mob selection.

Vaults and Loot

Vaults are blocks that hold locked treasure. To unlock a Vault, you need a Trial Key, which is ejected from a Trial Spawner after you defeat all its mobs. Each Vault can only be used once per player.

Vaults are an excellent source of high-level Enchanted Books and equipment, including a very rare chance to receive a Trident. Ominous Vaults, unlocked with Ominous Trial Keys, offer even better loot - including items exclusive to Ominous Vaults, such as the Heavy Core needed to craft the Mace.

New Mobs: Breeze and Bogged

Minecraft Breeze mob floating with wind charges
The Breeze is a hostile mob that fires wind charges in Trial Chambers

The Tricky Trials Update introduces two new hostile mobs, each with unique mechanics that change how you approach combat.

Breeze

The Breeze is a cunning, mischievous mob found exclusively in Trial Chambers. It moves primarily by leaping around its target, making it difficult to hit with melee attacks. Its defining trait is its ability to deflect almost all projectiles, making it effectively immune to ranged combat.

The Breeze shoots volatile wind energy in the form of Wind Charge projectiles at its target. After colliding with an entity or block, Wind Charges produce a Wind Burst that knocks back entities in the area. Wind Charges also break Decorated Pots and Chorus Flower blocks upon collision.

Crucially, the Breeze cannot deflect Wind Charges - this is the key to defeating it. You can use Wind Charges (crafted from Breeze Rods) to damage the Breeze, or deflect its own Wind Charges back at it using a shield.

When killed by a player or tamed wolf, the Breeze drops 1-2 Breeze Rods, with the number affected by the Looting enchantment. Breeze Rods can be crafted into 4 Wind Charges or combined with a Heavy Core to craft the Mace.

Bogged

The Bogged is a mossy, mushroom-covered variant of the Skeleton that shoots poisonous arrows. It has 16 health (8 hearts) instead of the Skeleton's 20 health, making it slightly easier to take down. However, it attacks at a slower interval of 3.5 seconds instead of 2 seconds, giving you more time to react between shots.

Bogged spawn naturally in Swamps and Mangrove Swamps, and can also be found spawning from Trial Spawners in some Trial Chambers. When killed by a player, they have a chance to drop Arrows of Poison. When sheared, they drop 2 mushrooms (either both red, both brown, or one of each).

The Mace: A Weapon That Defies Gravity

The Mace is a heavy weapon that deals bonus damage on falling attacks

The Mace is the Tricky Trials Update's signature weapon - a heavy weapon that rewards aerial combat with devastating damage. It has a base damage of 5 and the slowest attack speed of any weapon, but its unique smash attack mechanic more than compensates.

Crafting the Mace

To craft a Mace, you need two ingredients:

  • Breeze Rod - dropped by Breeze mobs (1-2 per kill, affected by Looting)
  • Heavy Core - obtained only from Ominous Vaults (7.5% chance)

Place the Heavy Core in the center slot of a crafting table with the Breeze Rod above it. The Mace can be repaired with Breeze Rods at an Anvil.

Smash Attack Mechanics

The Mace's unique attack triggers when you fall more than 1.5 blocks before hitting a target. A smash attack has multiple effects:

  • Safe Fall: Resets all vertical momentum and negates any fall damage accumulated from the fall
  • Extra Damage: Does more damage the further you fell before hitting the target:
    • First 3 blocks fallen: +4 damage per block
    • Next 5 blocks fallen: +2 damage per block
    • Any blocks fallen after: +1 damage per block
  • Great Knockback: Other entities near the struck enemy are knocked back by the immense force

This means a Mace strike from a great height can deal enormous damage - enough to one-shot many mobs. The Over-Overkill advancement challenges you to deal 50 hearts of damage in a single hit using the Mace.

The Mace can be combined with Wind Charges to launch yourself upward and deliver devastating smash attacks in rapid succession. This synergy between the Mace and Wind Charges creates a unique combat flow that rewards creativity and timing.

Mace Enchantments

The Mace supports existing enchantments (Mending, Unbreaking, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, Fire Aspect, Curse of Vanishing) and has three exclusive enchantments:

Enchantment Max Level Rarity Effect
Density V Common Increases damage per fallen block by 0.5 per level. Mutually exclusive with Breach, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods.
Breach IV Rare Reduces the effectiveness of armor on the target by 15% per level. Mutually exclusive with Density, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods.
Wind Burst III Unique Emits a Wind Burst upon hitting an enemy, launching the attacker upward. Only Wind Burst I can be found in Ominous Vaults; higher levels must be combined at an Anvil. Each level bounces the attacker an additional 7 blocks into the air.

Density and Breach are accessible through the Enchanting Table and can appear on Enchanted Books in random loot chests. Wind Burst is exclusive to Ominous Vaults, making it one of the rarest enchantments in the game.

The Crafter: Redstone Automation Reimagined

Minecraft Crafter block with redstone torch
The Crafter is the first redstone-powered crafting table in vanilla Minecraft

The Crafter is a new block that enables crafting of items and blocks via Redstone. It can be crafted with 5 Iron Ingots, 2 Redstone Dust, 1 Crafting Table, and 1 Dropper.

When powered by a Redstone pulse, the Crafter automatically crafts the recipe currently displayed on its top-face crafting grid. The result is ejected from the front face. If the recipe output has remainder items (such as a Bucket), both the result and remainder items are ejected together.

Key features of the Crafter include:

  • Redstone crystals on its back face light up to indicate its powered state
  • The crafting grid on its top face lights up red when it successfully crafts a recipe
  • The front face faces toward the player when placed
  • It can be used to create fully automated crafting systems

The Crafter is a game-changer for redstone engineers and survival players alike. It allows for compact, automated crafting setups that were previously impossible or extremely bulky. Combined with hoppers, droppers, and comparators, the Crafter opens up a new dimension of redstone possibilities.

New Blocks: Copper and Tuff Variants

The Tricky Trials Update significantly expands the Copper and Tuff block families with new variants for building and decoration.

Copper Family Additions

  • Chiseled Copper - decorative chiseled variant
  • Copper Grate - see-through grate block
  • Copper Bulb - a light-emitting block that dims as it oxidizes; scrape with an Axe to make it brighter
  • Copper Door - functional door with oxidation states
  • Copper Trapdoor - functional trapdoor with oxidation states

All new Copper blocks have oxidized and waxed variants. The Copper Bulb is particularly interesting - it emits light that decreases as the block oxidizes, and you can use an Axe to scrape off oxidation and restore its brightness. This creates dynamic lighting systems that change over time.

Tuff Family Additions

  • Chiseled Tuff - decorative chiseled variant
  • Tuff Stairs - stair variant for building
  • Tuff Slabs - slab variant for building
  • Tuff Walls - wall variant for building
  • Polished Tuff - smooth polished variant
  • Polished Tuff Stairs, Slabs, and Walls - polished building variants
  • Tuff Bricks - brick variant for detailed builds
  • Tuff Brick Stairs, Slabs, and Walls - brick building variants
  • Chiseled Tuff Bricks - decorative chiseled brick variant

These new blocks give builders a much wider palette of textures and styles to work with, particularly for underground, ancient, or industrial-themed builds.

New Items and Resources

Heavy Core

The Heavy Core is a mysterious, dense block obtained only from Ominous Vaults (7.5% chance). When placed, it has the same size as a player head and can be oriented in 12 directions. It takes 15 seconds to mine with a pickaxe, has blast resistance matching obsidian, and can be waterlogged. Its primary use is crafting the Mace.

Wind Charge

Wind Charges are throwable items that launch entities away from the impact of the Wind Burst. They can be used to launch yourself upward, trigger traps, or boost your jumps. Wind Charges deal a small amount of damage when hitting an entity directly and have a half-second cooldown after each use. They can also be fired from dispensers.

When a player uses a Wind Charge to launch themselves, they only accumulate fall damage if they land lower than where they were launched. This makes Wind Charges an excellent tool for safe vertical traversal.

Breeze Rod

The Breeze Rod is dropped by Breeze mobs and serves as a crafting ingredient for both Wind Charges (1 Breeze Rod = 4 Wind Charges) and the Mace (1 Breeze Rod + 1 Heavy Core).

Trial Explorer Map

The Trial Explorer Map is obtained from Journeyman-level Cartographer villagers for 12 Emeralds plus a Compass. It leads to the nearest Trial Chamber, making it the most reliable way to find these structures.

Ominous Bottle

The Ominous Bottle is a consumable item that, when drunk, applies the Bad Omen effect. It has an 18.6% drop chance when opening a Vault. Bad Omen is the gateway to Ominous Events - it becomes Raid Omen if you enter a village, or Trial Omen if you approach a non-ominous Trial Spawner.

Trial Key and Ominous Trial Key

Trial Keys are ejected from Trial Spawners after defeating all their mobs, and are used to unlock Vaults. Ominous Trial Keys are ejected from Ominous Trial Spawners and unlock Ominous Vaults. Both are single-use per player.

New Potions and Status Effects

The Tricky Trials Update introduces four new potions and their corresponding status effects, each with unique tactical applications:

Potion Status Effect Effect
Potion of Infestation Infested Entities have a chance to spawn silverfish when they take damage
Potion of Oozing Oozing Entities spawn two slimes upon death
Potion of Weaving Weaving Entities spawn cobwebs upon death and are not slowed by cobwebs
Potion of Wind Charging Wind Charged Entities spawn wind charges upon death

Each potion comes in normal, splash, and lingering variants, and has corresponding tipped arrows. These status effects add new layers of strategy to combat and mob farming - imagine a creeper farm where creepers spawn slimes on death, or a silverfish trap triggered by damaging mobs.

Ominous Events

The Bad Omen effect has been redesigned. It is no longer automatically granted when killing a raid captain - instead, it is caused by drinking an Ominous Bottle. Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen if you enter a village, or Trial Omen if you approach a non-ominous Trial Spawner within 15 blocks.

During an Ominous Trial, Trial Spawners convert to Ominous Trial Spawners, which spawn stronger mobs and projectiles (splash potions, lingering potions, tipped arrows, wind charges). The rewards are significantly better, making Ominous Trials a high-risk, high-reward experience.

New Music, Paintings, and Cosmetic Additions

The Tricky Trials Update adds a wealth of cosmetic content to personalize your world:

  • 20 new Paintings - 5 by artist Sarah Boeving and 15 by artist Kristoffer Zetterstrand
  • 3 new Music Discs by Aaron Cherof and Lena Raine
  • 9 new music tracks by Aaron Cherof, Kumi Tanioka, and Lena Raine
  • 3 new Pottery Sherds for Decorated Pots
  • 2 new Banner Patterns - Flow and Guster
  • 2 new Armor Trims - Bolt (from Vaults) and Flow (from Ominous Vaults)
  • 4 new cave ambient sounds for atmospheric underground exploration

Boats are now leashable, and doors of different materials can form double doors. End Crystals are now immune to fire damage. Witches always drop 4-8 redstone dust on death, improving the viability of witch hut farms.

Technical Improvements and Data Pack Changes

Beyond the visible features, Tricky Trials brings significant technical improvements:

  • Chunk loading performance improvements introduced in snapshot 24w19a, reducing memory and CPU overhead
  • Data-driven Enchantments, Paintings, and Jukebox Music Discs - a new era for data pack creators
  • Data Pack versions 42 through 48 with new providers for enchantments
  • New damage types for more precise combat mechanics
  • Recipe book improvements - pressing the selected key (space or enter) repeats the last selected recipe

These technical changes may not be visible in gameplay, but they lay the groundwork for future updates and empower the modding and data pack community to create richer custom content.

Tips for Your First Trial Chamber Expedition

Ready to dive into your first Trial Chamber? Here are some essential tips:

  1. Bring a bow or crossbow - Trial Spawners spawn ranged mobs like Skeletons, Strays, and Bogged. Ranged combat is essential.
  2. Pack Wind Charges - Breezes are immune to regular projectiles. Wind Charges are the key to defeating them.
  3. Bring a shield - Wind Charges from Breezes deal knockback. A shield helps you maintain position.
  4. Stock up on food and building blocks - Trial Chambers are large and complex. You may need to bridge gaps or build shelters.
  5. Look for Supply Barrels - these between-room caches provide valuable resources.
  6. Save your Trial Keys - use them on Vaults for the best loot. Don't waste them.
  7. Consider Ominous Trials - if you have Bad Omen, the rewards are significantly better, but the challenge is much harder.
  8. Watch for traps - Trial Chambers include trap sections. Stay alert and move carefully.
