What it does
Cobblemon Alpha Project is a side mod for Cobblemon, made by Cudzer. It adds rare Alpha Pokémon that spawn in the wild while you explore, so you don't have to summon them. Modrinth files the project under Game Mechanics, Mobs and World Generation.
How Alphas differ
An Alpha is a wild Pokémon with enhanced stats and behaviors. Its size can be scaled through configuration. It gets improved IVs, can carry a hidden ability, and comes with tutor move mastery.
Two extras are optional: a higher shiny chance and the hidden ability boost. Here's the thing, both are listed as options you can choose, not things the mod forces on every Alpha.
Spawning and datapacks
Each species definition is driven by datapacks. Spawning is therefore set species by species, which suits anyone who wants to decide which Pokémon get an Alpha form.
The mod also supports Alphas that spawn underground, so they're not limited to the surface.
Herds
Certain Alpha species can spawn with a linked group. Not every Alpha gets one, and the sources only say that certain species can. Herd behavior works like this:
- Herd members keep a loose formation around the Alpha.
- When the Alpha enters battle, the herd members flee.
- After the danger passes, the herd returns and takes up its formation again.
- Each member permanently tracks its associated Alpha.
Who it suits
It fits Cobblemon players who want rarer wild encounters with stronger Pokémon. So it also suits people who like to shape spawns with datapacks, since the per-species definitions are fully datapack-driven.
Compatibility and requirements
The mod supports Fabric and NeoForge. One Minecraft version listed on Modrinth is 1.21.1. That's the only version the project record names, so don't read it as support for any other release.
Server side is required. Client side is optional. The license is MIT.
Project status
The linked GitHub repository carries a notice. It says Alpha Pokémon have since been added to Cobblemon itself, and that the repository is archival only and will no longer receive updates.
The README also describes the mod as written for an older Cobblemon release than the one that added Alphas. Check that against the Cobblemon version you run before installing, because the Minecraft version on Modrinth and the Cobblemon version are separate things.
