Dynamic Surroundings is a client-side mod that changes how Minecraft feels by adding layered sound and visual details. So it works on both Fabric and NeoForge loaders for Minecraft 1.21.1 and requires no server-side installation.
The mod enhances audio by processing spatial sounds in 3D space, applying reverb effects based on the materials around the player. For example, sounds in caves or near stone walls will echo differently than in open air. Players can also control individual sounds using key binds to block, cull, adjust volume, or preview them.
Biome-specific atmospheric sounds play as you move through different environments, blending smoothly between biomes. This doesn't replace Minecraft’s default biome music but adds extra layers like wind, birds, or forest ambiance where appropriate.
Visual effects include flame jets over lava or magma, steam when water contacts hot blocks, and enhanced waterfall audio and visuals when flowing water is nearby. Hot blocks recognized by the mod include lava, magma, campfires, and cauldrons containing lava.
The mod replaces the default thunder sound with improved versions and includes a custom debug HUD accessible via key bind to move mod-related information out of the standard F3 screen. Honestly, it also provides client-side commands (DS commands) for developers to dump configuration data, with plans to document them for general use.
Dynamic Surroundings is compatible with Serene Seasons, allowing seasonal and temperature variations to influence its effects. And it works when connected to vanilla servers using either Fabric or NeoForge.
Optional dependencies include Mod Menu for in-game configuration access, Cloth Config API for settings UI, and Presence Footsteps for improved footstep sounds.
The mod doesn't include weather effects or aurora visuals, as the author notes these are being deprioritized due to existing improvements in Minecraft and personal limitations with shaders. It's licensed under the MIT License.
