par PigCart

Particle Rain replaces Minecraft weather with particle effects like angled rain, rotating snow, sandstorms, and mist across Fabric, Forge, and Neoforge.

Overview

Particle Rain is a client-side Minecraft mod by PigCart that replaces default weather rendering with particle effects. It adds visual conditions like angled rain, drifting snow, blowing sandstorms, and lingering mist. You get custom weather visuals without altering server logic. The mod is available under the MIT License on Fabric, Forge, and Neoforge.

Weather effects and visuals

Rain particles fall at an angle based on wind speed. During storms, the wind blows harder and shifts particle paths accordingly. Snow particles rotate slowly as they drift down to the ground.

In deserts and dry biomes, sandstorms blow dust and shrubs across the screen. These particles match the color of the surface block underneath, and the effect works in modded biomes. Rain and water drops pick up the local water tint of the biome.

Rain also interacts with the surrounding environment in specific ways. Falling rain creates water ripples on water surfaces that match your resource pack resolution. When raindrops hit a wall made of hard material, they create water streaks. You can also configure those streaks to appear on any block. In wet or spooky biomes, as well as right after a storm ends, mist hangs in the air. A rain haze option exists for each weather type, but it stays disabled by default because it can look strange with certain shaders or run slowly on older hardware.

Configuration and custom effects

You can adjust visual effects through an in-game menu. Here's the thing, open the settings by running the /particlerain command or by clicking through your mod loader menu.

The configuration menu lets you modify default particle behaviors or build new atmospheric effects tied to specific biomes and blocks. You can also bundle custom setups into resource packs by placing a particles.json file inside the assets/particlerain directory. The mod builds its snow and rain textures directly from base game weather textures, so standard resource packs work without extra particle images. Puddle features are no longer part of this mod and exist in a separate project.

Compatibility and requirements

Particle Rain is required on the client and unsupported on dedicated servers. It supports Fabric, Forge, and Neoforge loaders on Minecraft versions 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 1.21.9, 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.2, and snapshot 26.1-snapshot-1. If you run Fabric, you need Fabric API installed.

Shader pack support depends on your specific Minecraft version and shader pack, as some shaders do not fully support particle rendering.
