What ViaBackwards Does
ViaBackwards bridges the gap between older Java Edition clients and newer server versions. When installed alongside ViaVersion, it translates the network protocol so players on legacy clients can log in to a server that's running a more recent Minecraft release.
Who Should Use It
Server owners who want to keep players on older client versions without forcing everyone to upgrade will find this plugin useful. It's especially handy for communities that have members on a mix of versions from 1.10 up to the latest 1.21 releases.
Core Capabilities
- Protocol translation - older clients can connect to servers running newer versions, but no new client-side features are added. Things like attribute handling that rely on newer code will still fail.
- Server-side only - the plugin runs on the server; there's no client-side component.
- Broad version support - it works with Minecraft versions 1.21.8, 1.21.7, 1.21.6, 1.21.5, 1.21.4, 1.21.3, 1.21.2, 1.21.1, 1.21, 1.20.6, 1.20.5, 1.20.4, 1.20.3, 1.20.2, 1.20.1, 1.20, 1.19.4, 1.19.3, 1.19.2, 1.19.1, 1.19, 1.18.2, 1.18.1, 1.18, 1.17.1, 1.17, 1.16.5, 1.16.4, 1.16.3, 1.16.2, 1.16.1, 1.16, 1.15.2, 1.15.1, 1.15, 1.14.4, 1.14.3, 1.14.2, 1.14.1, 1.14, 1.13.2, 1.13.1, 1.13, 1.12.2, 1.12.1, 1.12, 1.11.2, 1.11.1, 1.11, 1.10.2, 1.10.1, 1.10, 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.10, 1.21.9, 26.2.
- Loader compatibility - works with Paper and Velocity servers. For BungeeCord you need the companion ViaBungee plugin.
Known Limitations
- Clients older than 1.17 can't see blocks below y=0 or above y=255; this limitation isn't planned to change.
- The plugin does not support versions 1.8 and lower; users needing that range should look at ViaRewind or ProtocolSupport.
- No new client-side features are added, so some modern mechanics will still be unavailable on older clients.
Installation Basics
Place both ViaVersion and ViaBackwards JAR files into your server’s plugins folder and restart. The plugin requires Java 17; older Java 8 builds are available for legacy environments. Real talk, maven users can add the ViaBackwards artifact from the viaversion-repo repository.
Release and Development
Official releases are posted on Hangar, Modrinth, and GitHub. Snapshot builds appear a few days after a Minecraft update, unless the protocol changes are trivial. The latest release (5.11.0) adds translatable component names for items and entities and updates custom model data handling.
