Rubidium

제작 Asek3

Rubidium is Asek3's Forge and NeoForge fork of Sodium, cutting chunk rendering CPU overhead and memory use for smoother frame rates on 1.16.5 through 1.20.1.

What It Does

Rubidium is a client-side rendering mod built by Asek3. It takes the rendering work originally done by CaffeineMC's Sodium and rebuilds it to run on Forge Mod Loader, with NeoForge also listed as a supported loader. The core idea is the same as Sodium's: replace the game's default chunk rendering path with a modern OpenGL pipeline that uses multi-draw techniques, which cuts CPU overhead for chunk rendering by around 90 percent. Chunk vertex data is also packed more tightly, cutting video memory and bandwidth needs by almost 40 percent.

Beyond the headline rendering change, Rubidium touches several other parts of the client. Block updates near the player run on multiple threads, which reduces the lag spikes that happen when chunks need to update. Chunk faces that aren't visible to the camera get culled early, before the GPU has to process them, which matters most on integrated graphics. Chunk loading and block rendering are both listed as areas the mod optimizes, and vertex building and matrix transform work is sped up too, which helps when a world has a lot of block entities, mobs, or items on screen at once.

The mod also reworks how the game allocates memory and triggers garbage collection, aiming to cut memory use and the stutter that comes from GC pauses. On the visual side, it fixes smooth lighting, including for fluids and other special blocks, and smooths out biome blending for blocks and fluids. Honestly, animated textures that aren't currently visible stop updating, which speeds up texture handling, especially on AMD cards.

Who It's For

This is for Forge and NeoForge players who want Sodium-style performance gains without switching to Fabric. It's a client-only mod. Rubidium is required on the client and isn't supported on the server, so there's nothing to install on a server to use it.

Compatibility and Requirements

Rubidium's own listing covers Minecraft 1.16.5, 1.19.2, 1.20, and 1.20.1 as supported versions. These are separate, specific releases rather than a continuous range, so don't assume every point release between them is covered. The mod is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0 only.

Shaders and Limitations

The project's own documentation states plainly that Rubidium doesn't work with Optifine. If you want shaders alongside Rubidium, the author points to a separate mod, Oculus, as the intended path instead of Optifine. Keep in mind that the performance figures above describe specific pieces of the rendering pipeline. Other areas mentioned, like chunk loading speed or mob rendering, are described as optimization targets rather than measured benchmarks, so treat them as directional improvements rather than guaranteed numbers.
