3D Skin Layers

van tr7zw

3D Skin Layers gives Minecraft player skins physical depth by turning flat outer skin textures and player heads into 3D models with distance-based rendering fallback.

Onze samenvatting

Wat dit project doet

What the mod does

Vanilla Minecraft renders the second layer of a player skin as a flat surface hovering over the character model. 3D Skin Layers converts that outer texture into an extruded 3D model. It gives physical depth to jackets, sleeves, hats, and custom accessories on your character.

The same 3D extrusion also applies to player head items placed in the world or held in inventories. Look, if your skin includes semi-transparent pixels for glasses or helmet visors, the mod preserves that transparency on the model.

Performance handling

Rendering extra polygon detail on multiple characters could cost performance in crowded spaces. The mod handles this by tracking distance. When a player moves more than 12 blocks away from your camera, their skin automatically drops back to standard 2D rendering.

Because this project is entirely visual, you run it strictly on your client. It requires no server installation and server environments don't support it.

Known limitations and visual quirks

The extruded outer layer is slightly larger than the base player model. Because of this size difference, certain skin designs don't align cleanly in three dimensions. Angular zigzag patterns wrapping around limbs can connect together at the edges. You can reduce that corner distortion by adding slightly transparent pixels to the texture gaps.

When you play with shaders active, some side faces on the 3D body parts display incorrect shadow rendering.

High-resolution HD skins don't work with this mod because non-standard pixel dimensions don't form the expected 3D shapes.

Mod and client compatibility

If you use custom armor mods where armor models sit closer to the body than vanilla armor, layers can clip through. You can fix this clipping by lowering the 3D size setting in the mod configuration.

3D Skin Layers works alongside Essential, Shoulder Surfing Reloaded, and Player Animator. Compatible mods using Player Animator include Better Combat and Emotecraft. CustomSkinLoader has partial support when paired with a helper mod. Lunar Client isn't supported.

On the 1.16.5 Minecraft release, Forge is unsupported until it handles JarInJar mods. Legacy Forge builds for 1.12.2 and 1.8.9 aren't supported. Verified Minecraft versions listed on Modrinth include 26.3, 26.2, 26.1.2, 26.1.1, 26.1, and 1.21.8 across Fabric, NeoForge, and Forge loaders.
