Countered's Terrain Slabs

van Countered

A world generation mod that smooths vanilla terrain with custom slabs on surface and underground, made from dirt, grass, gravel, sand, clay and deepslate, for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge.

Wat dit project doet

What It Does

Countered's Terrain Slabs changes how terrain generates in your world. Instead of blocky, stair-stepped hills, it layers thin slabs over the normal terrain mesh, so slopes read as smoother ground. The effect isn't limited to the surface either. Slabs generate inside caves too, on both floor and ceiling, so underground spaces get the same treatment.

The mod builds its slabs out of common terrain blocks: dirt, grass, mycelium, moss, gravel, sand, clay, and deepslate. If the source block is affected by gravity, so is the slab made from it. Break one of these slabs and you get the original block back in your inventory, not a slab item you'll never use.

Vegetation and snow still generate normally on top of the new slabs, so biomes keep their usual look even with the extra terrain detail.

Setup and Configuration

The mod ships with an embedded copy of Midnightlib, which gives you a config option to turn slab generation on or off entirely. That's useful if you want to try the terrain changes on an existing world without a full commitment.

This release is a multiloader rewrite. Here's the thing, the original version of the mod was Fabric only. This build runs the same feature set across Fabric, NeoForge, and Forge from one shared codebase. The developer describes the goal as cutting down on the full-block jumps you hit when climbing hills or mountains, without changing the vanilla look of the terrain underneath.

Who It's For

If you spend a lot of time exploring on foot, climbing terrain, or caving, this is a straightforward visual and movement change. It doesn't add new mechanics or items you need to learn. That just makes the existing terrain feel less chunky. Because it touches world generation, it needs to be installed on both the client and the server to work, and it's released under the MIT License.

Compatibility Notes

A few things are worth knowing before you install this. The project's own notes warn against updating directly from a version older than 3.0.0 straight to a 3.x.x release, since that jump deletes any slabs already generated in your world. If you run Quark alongside this mod with its "greener grass" option turned on, grass slabs can end up the wrong color. If you use Distant Horizons for far render distances, slabs can show up as plain brown cubes, though the mod includes a resource pack that partially corrects this. The project's most recent repository release specifically addressed a crash tied to Distant Horizons, so that compatibility path has recent attention.
