Responsive Shields

van revvilo

Responsive Shields removes the hidden 5-tick delay before a raised shield actually blocks damage. It runs server-side only, supports Forge and NeoForge, and lets you set the raise time from 0 to 5 ticks via a TOML config.

Onze samenvatting

Wat dit project doet

What it does Minecraft waits five ticks after you right-click before a shield can block anything. The animation finishes in about one tick, so there's a gap where you look protected but you aren't. Responsive Shields patches that check on the server and lets you choose how many ticks the game waits - zero for instant blocking, five for vanilla behavior, or anything in between. The change applies to every item that uses the standard blocking mechanic, vanilla or modded. ## Who it's for Players who fight vindicators, wardens, or modded bosses and need the shield to react the moment they click. Adventure modpack authors who want tighter combat without rewriting mob AI. Server operators who run Forge or NeoForge and want a single config file to tune shield responsiveness across the whole pack. ## Verified capabilities - Replaces the hard-coded five-tick threshold with a configurable value from 0 to 5 ticks. - Works with any item that uses the game's built-in blocking logic, including modded shields and weapons. - Server-side only: installing it on a client connecting to a vanilla or unrelated server has no effect. - Single TOML file (responsive-shields.toml) with two options: Raise Time and Enabled. - No client-side assets, no resource packs, no additional dependencies. ## Compatibility caveats - Requires the server to run Forge or NeoForge. Fabric, Quilt, and vanilla servers aren't supported. - Supported Minecraft versions are exactly those listed by the project: 1.21.4, 1.21.3, 1.21.2, 1.21.1, 1.21, 1.20.6, 1.20.4, 1.20.3, 1.20.2, 1.20.1, 1.20, 1.19.4, 1.19.3, 1.19.2, 1.19.1, 1.19, 1.18.2, 1.18.1, 1.18, 1.17.1, 1.17, 1.12.2, 1.12.1, 1.12. - No claim is made about compatibility with other combat mods; test in your pack before shipping. ## Configuration tips Setting Raise Time to 1 or 2 ticks keeps the visual raise animation roughly in sync with the blocking window, which feels natural while still removing most of the vanilla lag. Set it to 0 if you want true instant blocks for high-speed encounters. Toggle Enabled to false if you need to revert to vanilla behavior without uninstalling the mod.
