Treeplacer Mod

Treeplacer is a Minecraft mod that changes how saplings grow into trees by letting you define custom growth rules through data pack JSON files. Instead of being limited to default tree types, you can specify what grows based on the biome, the block the sapling is placed on, or apply a global rule across all biomes.

How It Works

The mod reads JSON files in your data pack at runtime, so changes take effect immediately after reloading the pack. Each rule maps conditions to tree features using identifiers like minecraft:birch or custom features from other mods. You can assign weights to control probability, use the weird flag for unusual growth variants, and set height limits with y.max or y.min.

Rule Types

  • Global rules: Apply to all biomes using keys like treeplacer:all_biomes.
  • Biome-specific rules: Target biomes such as minecraft:plains or minecraft:jungle with arrays of possible trees.
  • Block-based rules: Define what grows when a sapling is placed on specific blocks like minecraft:podzol or minecraft:coarse_dirt, using direct string mappings or nested conditions.

Advanced Features

Treeplacer supports 2x2 tree variants, including for mushrooms, using the same rule system. This means you can force saplings to grow into large jungle, dark oak, or even custom 2x2 fungi trees when conditions are met. The mod also integrates with world generation mods like Terralith and William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld, allowing you to grow their custom trees from saplings - something normally impossible without this mod.

Setup and Tools

To get started, create a JSON file in your data pack’s treeplacer folder. An online generator is available to help build valid override files. Look, example structures and usage guides are documented on the project’s GitHub wiki.

Compatibility

Treeplacer requires both client and server sides to function properly. It's licensed under the MIT License and supports the following mod loaders: Neoforge, Forge, and Fabric. Supported Minecraft versions are exactly: 1.20.1, 1.21.1, 1.21.5, 1.21.6, 1.21.7, 1.21.8, 1.21.9, 1.21.10, 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, and 26.2. These versions are taken directly from the mod’s official declaration and must not be condensed into ranges.

Use Case

If you enjoy mods that add new trees to world generation but wish you could grow them yourself, Treeplacer bridges that gap. For example, after installing Terralith, you can use Treeplacer to make saplings grow its custom pine or sequoia trees in the appropriate biomes, giving you full control over your world’s forestry.
