A Minecraft nether star is a rare, glowing item dropped exclusively by defeating the Wither boss. It serves as the core crafting ingredient for building beacons, which grant area-of-effect status buffs. You can't find it in natural loot chests, making boss combat the only standard survival route to earn one.

How to Get a Nether Star in Minecraft

The standard way to obtain a nether star in survival mode is by spawning and defeating the Wither boss. When the Wither is defeated, it drops exactly one nether star.

To summon the Wither, you need four blocks of soul sand or soul soil placed in a T-shape, topped with three wither skeleton skulls across the upper three blocks. Once the boss bar fills, the battle begins. Make sure you fight the Wither in an enclosed underground area or a designated arena, as its explosive attacks cause massive structural damage to your surroundings.

Nether Star Item ID and Technical Details

If you're playing in creative mode or managing a server, you can spawn a nether star directly using in-game commands. In the latest Minecraft 26.3 release, the standard item identifier is minecraft:nether_star.

Here are the key technical specifications for the item:

• Numerical ID (legacy versions): 399
• Stackable: Yes (up to 64 items per slot)
• Primary recipe: Beacon

On servers running admin plugins such as Essentials, the default give command might be overridden. If regular syntax fails, use /minecraft:give @p minecraft:nether_star 1 instead to bypass the plugin hook.

Crafting and Activating a Beacon

The primary use of a nether star is crafting a beacon. To craft one at a crafting table, combine:

• 1 Nether Star (center slot)
• 3 Obsidian (bottom row)
• 5 Glass blocks (remaining slots)

Once crafted, placing the beacon block on top of a valid pyramid made of mineral blocks (such as iron, gold, emerald, or diamond) lets you activate powerful secondary powers like Speed, Haste, Resistance, Jump Boost, and Strength.

Managing Resources on Multiplayer Servers

Nether stars stack up to 64, making them easy to store in standard chests or shulker boxes once you've multiple stars saved up. Keep them secured in an ender chest if you play on public multiplayer servers so other players cannot take them if you get eliminated while traveling back to base.
