What ThreadTweak Does
ThreadTweak is a fork of the old Smooth Boot mod that keeps the ability to tweak how Minecraft uses CPU threads. Inside the game you can set how many threads the engine runs on and raise or lower the priority of each one. All of these options live in a simple configuration file that the mod reads on launch.
Who It Helps
If you run a server or play on a machine where the default thread handling feels slow or unbalanced, ThreadTweak gives you a quick way to experiment. Look, it is useful for people who want to fine-tune performance on older hardware or on systems where the built-in scheduler doesn’t match their expectations.
Supported Set-Up
- Loaders - Fabric and Quilt.
- Side - The mod can be installed on the client or the server, but it is optional on both.
- Minecraft versions - 1.20 through 1.21.11, including all patch releases listed in the Modrinth record.
Features
- Change the number of threads used by Minecraft executors.
- Adjust the priority of each thread.
- All settings are exposed in a configuration file.
Why It Still Matters
Smooth Boot’s original goal of speeding up launch times was fixed in 1.19.4, but the thread-priority feature remains useful on some systems. The maintainer notes that tweaking priorities can still bring benefits, as shown in a discussion on the Smooth Boot issue tracker.
Caveats
The mod does not add any new performance gains beyond what the original Smooth Boot offered. It's simply a maintained version of the final release of that mod. No additional features have been added unless the maintainer chooses to do so.
How to Get It
Download the latest release from Modrinth or GitHub. Place the JAR in the mods folder of a Fabric or Quilt installation that matches one of the supported Minecraft versions.
Community
The project is maintained by getchoo, who keeps the code up to date with newer Minecraft releases. The original creator of Smooth Boot, UltimateBoomer, provided permission for the fork and suggested a new name to better reflect the mod’s purpose.
License
The code is released under the MIT License, allowing free use and modification.
Summary
ThreadTweak keeps the thread-tuning features of Smooth Boot alive for newer Minecraft versions. It works on Fabric and Quilt, supports 1.20-1.21.11, and lets you adjust thread counts and priorities through a config file. The mod is optional on both client and server and does not claim any new performance improvements beyond the original.
