Word navigation in chat and text fields
Editing text in Minecraft often feels clunky when typing chat messages or console commands. Better Selection modifies the game's move by word functionality. When you press Ctrl along with the left or right arrow, your cursor skips forward or backward by full words rather than single letters.
This adjustment makes text selection more pleasant across in-game input boxes. You'll move through phrases quickly and place the cursor where you want it. It helps you edit commands or fix typos in chat without tapping an arrow key for several seconds.
Platform shortcuts and script support
Operating system shortcuts differ between platforms, and this mod accounts for those differences. When running the game on macOS, standard controls adapt to typical Apple conventions:
Command and left arrow moves the cursor to the beginning of the line. Command and right arrow moves the cursor to the end of the line. Command and Backspace deletes everything to the left of the cursor. Command and Delete deletes everything to the right of the cursor. Shortcuts that use Ctrl on Windows use Option on macOS.
The mod also includes support for non-left-to-right scripts. Look, if you type in writing systems that read right-to-left, the cursor navigation still functions properly.
Mod details and compatibility limits
Better Selection is a Fabric mod created by MDLC01. But it belongs to the Utility and Quality of Life category. The mod operates as a client-side mod, meaning it is required on the client and unsupported on the server side. You don't place it in a dedicated server folder.
The author distributes the project under The Unlicense. Supported Minecraft versions include 26.2, 1.21.11, 1.21.10, 1.21.9, 1.21.8, 1.21.7, 1.21.6, 1.21.5, 1.21.4, 1.21.3, 1.21.2, 1.21.1, 1.21, 1.20.6, and 1.20.5.
It doesn't fix the Minecraft bug MC-121278. For players looking to address that issue, the creator developed a separate mod called Universal Shortcuts.
