MAtmos is a sound atmosphere generator for Minecraft 1.12.2 and 1.7.10. Originally created by Hurricaaane, it's now maintained by the community. The mod scans your surroundings when you join a single-player world or multiplayer server and generates a soundscape of natural noises to match the environment, addressing the perpetual silence of Minecraft.
What's new
Recent updates include a new system for detecting whether the player is outdoors, indoors, or deep indoors, enabling more accurate soundscapes. The flagship soundpack Matmos 2020 "Zen" was introduced to use this feature, offering smooth loops with indoor and outdoor variations. Additional improvements include update checking for compatible soundpacks, builds specifically for Forge, and various bug fixes and performance enhancements.
Soundpacks
MAtmos doesn't include any sounds by default. Instead, it relies on special resource packs called soundpacks to provide audio. Users can create their own soundscapes using these packs. Notable soundpacks include:
- MAtmos 2020 "Zen": The flagship soundpack featuring smooth loops and distinct indoors/outdoors variations for ambiences. It aims to deliver high-quality atmospheric sounds that blend naturally with the game. Requires MAtmos 34 or higher.
- Default soundpack (+introduction): The original MAtmos soundpack from 2012, updated to function with current versions.
- Rhapsodia: Focuses on enhancing audio fidelity, making rain sound like rain, thunder more impactful, and item interactions clearer.

Usage
To use MAtmos, place desired soundpacks in your resource packs folder and enable them as you would any other resource pack. Pressing F4 opens the settings menu, where you can adjust volume levels for individual expansions within soundpacks. You're free to mix and match expansions from different soundpacks to customize your audio experience.
Suggested companion mods
For improved immersion, the README recommends pairing MAtmos with Dynamic Surroundings for better footstep sounds - users should disable its biome sounds in configuration to prevent overlap. Honestly, sound Filters or the 1.7.10 fork of Sound Physics are suggested for adding reverb and muffling effects when sounds pass behind walls.
Mixin troubleshooting
MAtmos uses Mixin to apply game modifications. The standard mod jars embed Mixin to run standalone: the 1.7.10 version includes Mixin 0.7.11, and the 1.12.2 version includes Mixin 0.8.3. This can cause conflicts with other mods that require different Mixin versions.
To resolve Mixin-related launch errors:
- Use MAtmos variants ending in "+nomixin", which don't embed Mixin but require an external provider.
- Install a Mixin bootstrap mod such as MixinBooter for 1.12.2 or UniMixins for 1.7.10.
If issues stem from ASM transformers conflicting with Mixin, the Mixingasm module can help. UniMixins includes this on 1.7.10; on 1.12.2, add the Mixingasm module alongside MixinBooter.
Building from source
The repository uses Git submodules; after cloning, run git submodule update --init to fetch dependencies. That project is built with Gradle using an older buildscript that requires Java 8. Subprojects for each Minecraft version reside in the projects/ directory and can be targeted with -Ptarget=foo. For IDE testing, documented launch arguments include --tweakClass org.spongepowered.asm.launch.MixinTweaker --mixin haddon.mixin.json.
