Overview
Mimicked adds an eerie twist to Minecraft by occasionally capturing short clips of a player’s voice and playing them back through nearby entities. The effect is designed to feel natural enough that you might mistake the mob’s utterance for a real player, creating a subtle horror atmosphere.
How It Works
When Simple Voice Chat is installed on both client and server, the mod listens for spoken input, stores a clip, and later triggers playback from a mob. Playback frequency defaults to roughly one event every five minutes per nearby player, but every setting can be tweaked in two configuration files. The mod can apply distortion effects such as pitch shift, reversal, or radio interference to make the mimicked voice sound unsettling.
Configuration and Overdrive
Two TOML files - mimicked-common.toml and mimicked-sfx.toml - control everything from recording chances to which entities are allowed to speak. An optional “Overdrive” mode increases both the rate and intensity of mimicking when specific “overdrive” entities are close, letting you amplify the horror effect without manual adjustments.
Client-Side, Server-Side, or Both
Mimicked can run in three modes. In client-only mode, only the player who recorded the clip hears the mimic, making it a personal scare. Server-only mode removes that limitation, letting all players hear the mimicked voice. Running the mod on both sides lets you choose whether the mimic is heard by everyone or just the recorder, using the preferServerSide setting.
Compatibility
The mod is built for Minecraft Forge and supports the versions 1.21.1, 1.20.1, and 1.19.2. It requires the Simple Voice Chat mod to be present and up-to-date on both client and server. No other loaders are supported, and the mod doesn't function without Simple Voice Chat.
Licensing and Source
While the project remains All Rights Reserved, the full source code has been publicly available since version 2.0.0, allowing anyone to inspect the implementation. The author of the mod is iccrow.
Who Might Enjoy It
Players who like subtle horror elements in multiplayer worlds will find Mimicked useful. It works best on servers where voice chat is already enabled, and where the occasional uncanny voice from a mob can add tension without breaking gameplay.
Getting Started
Install Simple Voice Chat first, then add Mimicked to your Forge mods folder. Adjust the configuration files if you want more frequent mimics or want to enable Overdrive. The mod will start recording automatically once the game launches.
Limitations
Mimicked doesn't generate synthetic voices; it only replays recorded clips. Honestly, it also doesn't function on Fabric, NeoForge, or any other mod loader. The mod’s client-side requirement means it can't run on a pure server without at least one client having it installed.
Future Updates
The repository notes that new releases may add support for additional Minecraft versions or address bugs, but any such changes will be reflected only when the author updates the Modrinth page or GitHub repository.
