What serena does
serena is a server side plugin that lets one player pick another player up and carry them around on their head. With the right permission you can also pick up entities that aren't players. It sits in the Game Mechanics category and keeps a narrow focus.
Consent and the toggle
Being carried is opt in. Each player runs the serena command to set whether other players may pick them up. If a player hasn't enabled it, they can't be picked up, unless someone holds the bypass permission. That keeps the mechanic from being used to shove around players who want no part of it.
Commands
There are two. serena toggles your own pickup setting. serena-reload reads the plugin's configuration files from disk again, which helps when you change the config while the server is up.
Permissions
serena breaks access into separate nodes:
- serena.toggle: change your own pickup setting.
- serena.reload: run the reload command.
- serena.pickup.player: pick up other players.
- serena.pickup.entity: pick up entities that aren't players.
- serena.pickup.bypass: pick a player up even when they've pickup turned off.
So you can grant carrying rights without the bypass, or give staff the bypass for moderation while everyone else respects the toggle.
Compatibility
The Hangar listing marks serena as server side required and client side unsupported, so players install nothing. It's listed for Paper and for Minecraft 1.19. The linked repository frames it as a piggyback mechanic and refers to Spigot. This code is under the MIT license. Behaviour on versions or loaders outside that list is unknown, so test it on your setup first.
Who it's for
This fits survival servers and small SMPs that want a social, silly mechanic with little configuration. Minigame servers could use it for carry or rescue mechanics. Real talk, it's not a utility or optimization plugin and does not claim to be.
Building it
The source repository is public and builds with Gradle through the standard build task, with the resulting jar placed in the build output folder. The evidence provides no separate install guide beyond that.
