Minecraft Java 26.2 did not overhaul Lush Caves, the Deep Dark or Mangrove Swamps. Its major biome addition was the new Sulfur Caves, an underground biome built around Sulfur, Cinnabar, Sulfur Pools and the Sulfur Cube. This guide focuses on what Mojang actually added in the June 16, 2026 Java 26.2 release and avoids attributing unrelated terrain changes to the update.
What is the Sulfur Caves biome?
Sulfur Caves generate naturally underground. Mojang's release notes describe bands of Sulfur and Cinnabar, the new Sulfur Cube mob and Cave Spiders, plus Sulfur Pools that contain Potent Sulfur. The biome is therefore more than a palette swap: it has its own blocks, mob and fluid-related interactions.
The release notes do not publish a fixed Y-level or a guaranteed distance from a particular surface biome. Avoid guides that promise exact coordinates without a seed and version. Explore underground areas in a world generated with Java 26.2 or later, and make a backup before testing new content in an important save.
Sulfur and Cinnabar block sets
Java 26.2 adds Cinnabar and Sulfur stone block sets. Each set includes polished and brick variants, with matching stairs, slabs and walls. Mojang also lists Chiseled Cinnabar and Chiseled Sulfur blocks. These additions give builders a dedicated material palette for underground bases, cave entrances, industrial rooms and decorative structures.
Because the sets include stairs, slabs and walls, they can be used for more than flat cave walls. Mix the full blocks with the shaped variants to create supports, ledges, pillars and pathways. The official notes confirm the block families, but they do not claim that older biomes received new terrain palettes in this update.
Potent Sulfur and Sulfur Pools
Potent Sulfur generates naturally in water pools inside the Sulfur Caves. It produces bubbles that rise through up to four water source blocks above it. When placed beneath one to four water source blocks, it creates a cloud of nausea-causing gas on the water surface. The cloud spreads across adjacent water up to a maximum radius of three blocks.
Potent Sulfur can also be crafted from nine Sulfur blocks. When placed above a Magma Block or Lava Block and below one to four water source blocks, it creates a geyser. A Magma Block produces eruptions at random intervals, sending water particles upward and applying an upward impulse to entities above it. Lava produces a continuous eruption with slightly muted sounds. Geyser eruptions emit game events at the beginning and end, which Sculk Sensors can detect.
Sulfur Springs above the caves
Sulfur Springs are a separate surface feature that generates naturally above the Sulfur Caves biome. They consist of Sulfur, Potent Sulfur and Magma Blocks. Mojang lists four size variants: small, medium, large and extra large. If you find a Sulfur Cave below, explore the terrain above it to look for the associated spring feature.
Sulfur Spikes
Sulfur Spikes generate naturally on Sulfur blocks inside the Sulfur Caves. Placing one on a ceiling creates a stalactite; placing one on the floor creates a stalagmite. Multiple spikes can be combined into longer formations. Stalactites and stalagmites merge when their tips are next to each other, unless you sneak while placing them.
Sulfur Spike stalactites can grow when placed beneath a Sulfur block. Unsupported stalagmites break, while unsupported stalactites fall. A falling stalactite can hurt entities because it is sharp; stalagmites are not sharp and do not cause extra landing damage. Thrown Tridents can also break Sulfur Spikes.
The Sulfur Cube belongs to the biome
The Sulfur Cube spawns in the new Sulfur Caves. When a player interacts with it while holding an absorbable block, it takes the block, disables its AI and becomes a physical object. The absorbed block determines one of several physical archetypes, changing properties such as speed, bounciness, friction, air drag and buoyancy.
Players can remove the absorbed block with Shears, which re-enables the cube's AI. Small Sulfur Cubes can be fed Slime Balls to grow, and a large cube can be picked up with an empty Bucket. The exact archetype depends on the absorbed block, so use Mojang's release notes for the full mapping rather than assuming every block produces the same behavior.
What did not change in 26.2?
The official Java 26.2 release notes do not describe a Lush Cave expansion, a Deep Dark navigation overhaul, a Mangrove Swamp visual redesign or general refinements to deserts, jungles and badlands. Those claims should not be repeated as 26.2 features. The confirmed biome content is the Sulfur Caves and the related Sulfur Springs, blocks, pools, spikes and mob.
For the exact feature list and technical details, read Mojang's Java 26.2 release notes. They are the primary reference for generation, block behavior and the Sulfur Cube mechanics.
